Just seventy miles away from the north-western coast of Africa sit the Spanish Canaries. Volcanoes have played a large part in the history of the islands – they were initially formed by a series of eruptions and are still warmed by the many volcanoes dotted throughout. The Canaries’ year-round subtropical climate draws millions of visitors to the purpose-built resorts on its five principal islands – Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, La Palma, and Gran Canaria. Each island has its own distinct character and landscape. Beach buffs will be fond of Gran Canaria holidays, as the Maspalomas sand dunes are a major seaside attraction. Plenty of family-friendly attractions can be found in Tenerife, as well as Spain’s tallest mountain.
Some travellers come to the Canaries to explore its unique and dramatic national parks, which include the lava fields of Lanzarote, Tenerife’s towering Mount Teide and the magical forests of La Gomera. A day trip to the volcanic Teide National Park in Tenerife or Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, both preserved as if an eruption happened yesterday, is a highlight of any trip to the islands. Of the several minor islands, pretty and diminutive La Gomera is well worth a visit and is easily reached on a boat excursion during Tenerife holidays.
Tourists interested in exploring the culture of the islands should head to San Cristobal de La Laguna, which is the oldest city in the Canaries and a designated World Heritage Site. Las Palmas in Gran Canarias is likewise a popular choice for authentic Canaries experiences. The Canaries has many different beach options. Fuerteventura holidays often include trips to the gorgeous white sandy beaches of Jandia. The golden sands of the Sahara desert blow over and settle on the gorgeous beaches of Gran Canaria, whilst Tenerife features beaches comprised of black volcanic sand.
